Auto Show: 2016 La Auto Show
2017 Land Rover Discovery: LA Auto Show
What Is It?
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery replaces the brand's boxy LR4 SUV for the latest model year. While the new Discovery already made its debut earlier this year at the Paris Motor Show, Land Rover has picked the LA Auto Show for the SUV's North American debut.
On the outside, the 2017 Discovery offers far more rounded styling than the LR4 (and the LR3 before it). But the profile is still similar, thanks to an upright rear end that's been a hallmark of Land Rover SUVs since the Discovery first debuted in 1994. Still, this one isn't as boxy as previous models. Inside, the interior is exactly as we'd expect, with many touches carried over from other Land Rover and Range Rover vehicles. Meanwhile, 3-row seating is certainly available and likely standard.
Under the hood, Land Rover is offering two options: a 340-horsepower supercharged V6 and a 240-hp turbodiesel V6. Both engines will come to the U.S. market, while European buyers can also choose from smaller diesel powerplants. All-wheel drive and air suspension will likely be standard in the 2017 Discovery, while performance will likely improve compared to the LR4 -- largely because the latest model sheds roughly 1,000 pounds compared to the outgoing version thanks to a liberal use of aluminum.
The 2017 Land Rover Discovery will start just under $52,000 with shipping, which is roughly the same base price as the outgoing LR4.
When Can You Get It?

If the Range Rover Sport is a little too expensive for your budget -- or maybe you want something with slightly softer styling -- the Discovery is for you. Positioned above the smaller Discovery Sport in Land Rover's fast-growing lineup, the 2017 Discovery will likely offer a roomy interior, better off-road capabilities than rivals, better gas mileage than its predecessor and a more carlike driving experience than Range Rover models. Pricing is also fairly reasonable, especially for a Land Rover: The SUV's starting MSRP of $52,000 with shipping is in line with rivals.
Other Cars to Consider
2017 Audi Q7 -- The recently redesigned Audi Q7 is a little cheaper than the Discovery. While the Q7 offers a lot of technology, we're eager to see how the two match up on the road.
2017 Infiniti QX60 -- The QX60 comes standard with 3-row seating, a luxurious cabin and a carlike driving experience. But it doesn't have the muscle of the discovery or the cachet of the Land Rover brand name.
2017 Lexus GX -- The GX is known for impressive reliability and comes standard with a bulky V8 that probably feels more muscular than the Discovery's powertrain, but it also has a more trucklike ride and driving experience.
Used Mercedes-Benz GLS -- The Mercedes GLS (formerly known as the GL-Class) starts around $67,900 with shipping, giving it a far more expensive starting price than the Discovery. But it also has more power and, we suspect, a roomier interior. As a result, you may want to consider a used model.
